A PDF split tool breaks one PDF file into several smaller ones — either a separate file for every single page, or a new file every few pages — and delivers the results together in a .zip archive. It solves the opposite problem to merging: instead of combining documents, it separates a file that actually contains several distinct sections into pieces that can be shared, filed or reused independently.

This comes up wherever a single PDF is really a stand-in for many smaller documents. A bulk scan of a stack of signed forms is technically one file, but each page belongs to a different person. A scanned book or report might need to be broken into chapters. It is also considerably faster than opening a heavy PDF editor just to save a handful of pages as a new file.

Businesses often split PDFs as part of a document-processing pipeline: an inbound scanned batch gets split so each page (or set of pages) can be routed to the right customer record. Individuals split PDFs more casually — pulling one chapter out of an e-book, or separating a single invoice from a combined statement. Students split long lecture-note PDFs into per-topic files that are easier to review before an exam. Office workflows frequently split a large report into smaller sections purely so email attachment size limits are no longer a problem.

Under the hood, splitting works by reading the page count of the uploaded PDF and cutting it at fixed intervals you choose — every single page by default, or every few pages if you want fewer, larger pieces. Because the operation only ever reads and copies existing pages, it works the same way regardless of whether the source PDF contains text, scanned images, or a mix of both.
